ESM Crew Seminar
In our endeavour to upgrade their knowledge and continuous training, a one-day seminar was held for the Ratings on 27th March 2007 at the ESM Auditorium in Govandi, Mumbai.
The seminar that was attended by over 40 Ratings from the ESM fleet and representatives from both ESM Mumbai and faculty from SIMS Mumbai, drew light on various areas of concern that included mandatory ESM procedures, the stringent Drug & Alcohol policy, the spirit of the CBT training program, maintenance and hygiene, which were believed to be the main reasons for many of the incidents happening on board.
Participants were advised on the usage, procedures and benefits of the Seagull CBT program, and also encouraged to complete the training modules on board. Following which, an excellent presentation on HSEQA related matters by Capt Khandekar emphasized on the measures to tackle areas of concern.
With regards to on board maintenance and hygiene, Capt Raktim Roy discussed the requirement of Area of Responsibility (AOR) to inculcate responsibility among all on board towards the good maintenance of the vessel. The participants were also motivated to compete for the quarterly AOR incentive award.
To clarify certain health-related misconceptions that seafarers |
have, Dr. Ashfaq Ubharay, a competent medical practitioner, was invited to speak to the participants. While debunking common fallacies and convincing the participants that working on board Chemical and Oil tankers do not adversely affect their health and well-being, proper precautions still need to be taken at all times and the seriousness of LFT was conveyed to all.
An impressive presentation by Mr Richie Kotwal, Asst. Crew Manager from ESM Mumbai, pointed out the main behavioural issues with Indian seafarers serving on foreign vessels. It was indeed an eye opener for the participants to improve their behavioural pattern and conduct on board to maintain the reputation of the professional Indian seafarer, who is omni present. The need to update the PTR book was also discussed along with related DG circulars.
The seminar also delved on Oil Major and PSC requirements where issues like the drug & alcohol policy, need of proper maintenance and safe operation of tankers, hazards & safeties were discussed in detail. In addition, the participants were also given a thought provoking and interesting presentation regarding marine litters, correct garbage disposal and energy conversation.
At the end of the seminar, participants showed great appreciation for the efforts put in by both ESM and SIMS in educating the sailing staff and we are pleased to have received such a positive response from our crewmembers. The day’s event was concluded with a Cocktail & Dinner party at Hotel OASIS that was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. |
