 POINTS TO PONDER

An aging Hindu master grew tired of his apprentice complaining, and so, one morning, sent him for some salt.

When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.

"How does it taste?" the master asked.

"Bitter," spit the apprentice.

The master chuckled and then asked the young man to take the same handful of salt and put it in the lake.

The two walked in silence to the nearby lake, and once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water, the old man said, "Now drink from the lake."

As the water dripped down the young man's chin, the master asked, "How does it taste?"

"Fresh," remarked the apprentice.

"Do you taste the salt?" asked the master.

"No," said the young man.

At this, the master sat beside this serious young man who so reminded Him of himself and took his hands, offering, "The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things .... Stop being a glass. Become a lake."

ATTITUDE

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.

It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.

It will make or break a company, a church, a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past.

We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.

We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes.

A Letter from ESM...

Apart from the traditional festivities like Diwali and Id, we did have a lot to celebrate during the month of November. The first and foremost being the successful implementation of Integrated Management System (IMS) certified under DNV, Norway. It is indeed the result of hard work by practically all the sectors of the organization i.e. management staff from ESM offices, training staff from SIMS and finally the sailing staff who joined hands in achieving this feat. Leading and guiding the  team was of course our HSSE team from ESM, Singapore and ESM, Mumbai under Capt. Arun Sundaram who certainly deserve a big thanks from all of us!

What is achieved is now just a beginning, the process goes on and what we aim is far beyond a mandatory standard and certification.

ESM is indeed well positioned for a better future with the infra-structure that has been built so far and some more (like the Pre-sea school at Lonavala) that are in the pipe line. A full fledged in-house training facility which is unique not only in India but in this part of the world, our emphasis has been to polish our work force to a quality and standard unbeatable in the world market. We do believe - it is just a question of time and  perseverance in our chosen path. Like Truth, it’s Quality and only Quality which will bring us to the height we have targeted ourselves. Needless to say, with the implementation of IMS we have achieved a step closer to that target.
