Tentative course schedule for the month of Dec 2007. May subject to changes. Please contact SIMS Mumbai for confirmation.

As we conclude the year 2007 with this month’s newsletter, it is with great pride and satisfaction that we can announce the year as one of the most memorable and epoch making year in the history of Executive Ship Management. A brilliant chapter in the ESM’s history was written with the opening of the much awaited pre-sea campus of the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies at Lonavala and when over hundred of guests from across the globe unequivocally declared it as a state-of-the-art and most unique maritime training centre they have ever seen and experienced.

The year 2007 also marked the last year of a decade of existence as a ship manager and we look back at a year which brought a range of experience and recognition not very many ship managers could claim of. From a third party ship manager, we have established ourselves as a top class maritime training provider of international standard and repute.

But, what will especially mark the year 2007 will be the leadership and teamwork that took the entire organization to a new height of success and poised for the better things to come in the year 2008.

We thank each one of you in ESM and SIMS for making the year a dazzling success while preparing for the coming year to bring in many more success stories for all of us.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Natural Cancer Combatants

BROCCOLI

How it combats cancer: Research has revealed that a chemical component called indole-3-carbinol can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective variety.
PAPAYA

How it combats cancer: Its plentiful store of vitamin C works as an antioxidant and may also reduce absorption of cancer-causing nitro amines from the soil or processed foods. Papaya contains folic acid, which has been shown to minimize certain cancers.
GARLIC

How it combats cancer: Garlic’s immunity-enhancing allium compounds block carcinogens from entering cells and slow tumour development. A component of garlic oil has also been shown to render carcinogens in the liver inactive. Studies have linked garlic to lower risk of stomach and colon cancers.
SWEET POTATO

How it combats cancer: This nutrient-dense food contains many anticancer properties. It’s loaded with beta-carotene, which protects DNA in the cell nucleus from cancer-causing chemicals outside the nuclear membrane.

GRAPEFRUIT

How it combats cancer: Grapefruits, like oranges and other citrus fruits, contain monoterpenes, believed to help prevent cancer by sweeping carcinogens out of the body. Some studies show that grapefruit can inhibit the proliferation of breast-cancer cells in vitro. It also contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, and folic acid.
AVOCADO

How it combats cancer: Avocados are rich in a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals in the body by blocking intestinal absorption of certain fats. Ounce for ounce, avocados also supply 60 percent more potassium than bananas and are a strong source of beta-carotene.
SEAWEED

How it combat cancer: Seaweed and other sea vegetables contain beta-carotene, protein, vitamin B12, fibre, and chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones - important fatty acids that may help in the fight against certain cancers.
TOFU

How it combats cancer: Soy contains several types of phytoestrogens -weak, non-steroidal estrogens that could help prevent both breast and prostate cancer by inhibiting the growth of epithelial cells and new blood vessels that tumours require to flourish.
