HEAVY WEATHER SAFETY CAMPAIGN: 1ST TO 31ST DEC 2006

In the light of recent incidents related to heavy weather the associated hazards were highlighted in the form of a short heavy weather campaign for one month from 1 Dec 06 to 31 Dec 06.

The priority of safety in decreasing order is: Human Life, Environment, Property and Process.

While heavy weather can cause incidents of each of these types, it is PERSONAL SAFETY that is of paramount importance.

Rough weather, though often very cunning, has its own telltale signs. The wise mariner always keeps track of these signs to avoid getting caught on the wrong foot.

Of all other means of avoiding accidents, precautions against heavy weather damage / injury are the ones which need to be planned for and taken WELL in advance. For, once the bad weather sets in, there is precious little one can do to get self and vessel out of trouble. Personal safety should not be jeopardised by leaving securing for rough weather for the last moment.

The sea wrecks havoc on the unprepared!

The campaign itself included a Questionnaire and a Case Study for both the fortnights. It laid stress on personal safety and Company Procedures regarding heavy weather.

While the entries are still coming in, we thank all our ship staff for their contribution with renewed vigour.
