ESM officers get prepared for the future ahead |

Ten external and in-house experts took to the floor to address the officers of the ESM managed fleet in a highly thought provoking and timely organized seminar aptly named “The Challenges ahead” held at the ESM conference hall at Govandi on 29th June, 2007.
The seminar was designed on the theme to give an opportunity to the participants to reflect together on current best practices and in particular, highlighting vetting, risk management and TMSA issues. The Seminar aimed to act as a forum for the exchange of experiences and good practices across the industry.
Addressing the gathering, Capt. Vivek Sharma, Ship Quality Assessor, Shell Trading explained general business principle of the Shell in vetting with the objective of avoid using sub-standard Ship. He also described the process of vetting and emphasizing that it starts with ‘SIRE’ report, considered as the first ingredient.
Capt. Sharma explained about prioritized basis for assessment and the passive verses active vetting methodology employed by Shell while undertaking an inspection.
On the area of Crew matrix, Capt. Sharma explained that the focus is not just on rank experience of Ship’s crew, rather the emphasis is more on how well the crew are familiar with the respective company SMS manual.
Mr. G.M. Cowlagi, the DPA from ESM, explained the recently implemented “Document Management System”. Mr. Cowlagi highlighted the benefit of changing over from the age old system of explosion of paper work to the environment friendly ‘document management system’. He explained how DMS branching out into Knowledge management system and Ship/Shore form.
‘Risk Assessment & Management’ by Mr. Manish Jha, Faculty, SIMS turned out to be a model presentation which highlighted the least managed ‘Behavioral’ aspect in the framework of risk assessment and management.

He convincingly argued that the risk may not be eliminated altogether but certainly, can be managed within limits with appropriate methods and knowledge.
Mr. Diwakar Puri (SIMS), in his presentation dwelt upon the very topical oily water separator issues. He once again high lighted the regulations and latest information from the industry to drive home the importance of adhering to the rule book.
“Capt. Rohit Guliani, a Faculty from SIMS initiated a lively and interactive session on the practical approach on “TMSA and First Class Tanker Operations”. He explained about the TMSA principle stressing on proactive approach and exceeding customer’s expectations. He further commented on goal by way of best practices and a KPI approach for Ship Managers.
Capt. John Bussel, CDI inspector was invited to give a presentation on “Inspector’s Viewpoint”. He discussed about objectives of SIRE and CDI inspection and highlighted the factual observation. He further explained what an Inspector looks for when he boards the Ship for inspection which was well supplemented by questions and answer session following his presentation.
“An Inconvenient Truth” on Global Warming was then screened and explained by Mr. Shirish Kumar, SIMS to supplement his topic- Marine Environmental Awareness. What an eye opener and a superb presentation indeed!
Two other faculty members Capt. B.K. Dubey and Mr. Shankarmani, SIMS also addressed the participants on various crucial training issues.
The Seminar began with a brief introduction by Mr. J.K.M. Nair, Director, SIMS as well as brought to a close by him with a motivational closing briefing and feedback. |
