Senior Officer’s Seminar/ TOTA Workshop 2007

A two-day seminar and workshop on leadership and “training for trainers” for the senior sailing staff successfully ended on 23rd February. Jointly organised by ESM and SIMS, the event was held at the ESM seminar hall at Mumbai on 22nd and half day of 23rd Feb. It culminated in the visit to SIMS, Lonavala campus on the afternoon of 23rd Feb by all the senior officers.

The seminar delved on a number of pertinent issues related to leadership, procedural compliance and operational safety while the workshop on “Training on onboard trainers” emphasised and educated on the role of the senior officers as trainers on board.

The main objective of the seminar was to build a team spirit between ship & shore staff so that vessel’s operation can be further enhanced. The topics covered during the seminar were ‘Procedural compliance’, ‘TMSA’, ‘Marine Environmental Awareness’, and ‘Practical Aspects of MARPOL Annex VI’. The main speakers were Capt Arun Sundaram (GM, ESM Singapore) Capt. Nikhil Khandekar (Manager, HSSEQA), Mr.Diwakar Puri (Faculty, SIMS), Mr. Maneesh Jha (Faculty, SIMS) and Mr. Shirish Kumar (Faculty, SIMS).

A special and very engrossing workshop on analysing the ‘Collision Cases’ was the highlight of the seminar, which was conducted by Mr.Tony Schroder, Claims Manager, Swedish Club. This interactive session enhanced the understanding of the participants, not only about the causes of some 23 collisions cases resulting in an average damage cost of Two Million Dollars each, but also the insurance and culpability issues of the ships for apportioning their liability to opponents.

The workshop was followed by another extremely productive interactive
session between various company departments’ officials and the senior officers on numerous issues to effectively address the operational matters. There were suggestions that topics related to ‘Stress Management’ and ‘Behaviour under Panic Situations’ also to be included in future. They felt not only the junior officers but even the families should be included in such seminars. The officers also offered various suggestions on increasing the efficacy of training on board.

The day ended with a sumptuous dinner party attended by the shore staff of ESM, Mumbai as well as the SIMS faculty. Apart from the dinner, participants enjoyed a close encounter with the shore staff with whom they normally communicate either through email or phone.

The second day was devoted to the TOTA workshop.  This workshop was a special initiative towards building a strong foundation for our future seafarers i.e. the cadets undergoing pre-sea training at Lonavala as well as junior officers/ratings.  To streamline their on-board training, the senior ranks were appraised of the process followed by SIMS for measuring the shipboard performance and how it helps analyse further training need of various staff.  CBT, PTRB, GME & IME TAR Book, IGNOU DLP Programme and Sea staff appraisal system were explained to the participants, so that requirements of the Director General of Shipping as well as the company’s are met in entirety. The main speakers for the TOTA Workshop were Mr. J K M Nair (Director, SIMS-Mumbai), faculty members Mr. S. Viswanathan, Capt. B K Dubey, Mr. Diwakar Puri, Mr. P V Shankaramani and General manager, HR, ESM, Mumbai Capt. R. Gupta.

At the end of the seminar, the participants and their family members were taken on a guided tour around the 55-acre extra-modern campus of SIMS Lonavala. The Campus is in the final phase of its completion including the landscaping. They saw the unique ship-in-campus- first of its kind in the world taking shape.  All the participants were exuberant to see the company’s training commitment as well as the state of art campus. SIMS Lonavala surely is poised to become world’s best maritime institute, they all opined.

Toss For SUCCESS!

It was yet another year of tossing for prosperity and success when our Singapore office had the regular “Lo-Hei” session to celebrate Chinese New Year on 24th February 2007, Saturday.

Having the “Lo Hei” or tossing of the Yusheng (raw fish salad platter) is a Chinese New Year tradition unique to Singapore and Malaysia, which appeared during the early 20th century when there was an influx of Chinese immigrants in

these areas. The Chinese believe that eating this dish means they will be blessed with good fortune and prosperity in the coming year since “Lo-Hei” literally means to toss for success.

It is also believed that the higher you toss, the better your luck. Hence, all staff members tossed as high as they could as they exchanged wishes of happiness, prosperity and good fortune for everyone in the ESM family!
