As we tossed the “Yu Sheng”- the raw fish salad (and also a vegetarian version of it for our strictly vegetarian staff) on the 18th of the month, it was not just to celebrate the Chinese New Year and to herald in more prosperity and abundance in the year of the Rat, but an occasion we have been celebrating with our Chinese colleagues to share our hopes and aspirations for the organization, the friendship and closeness of all of us who are taking ESM forward day after day and year after year.

ESM is a true representation of a Singaporean organization with an international outlook. Spread out in four countries over two continents, we have been emulating a strong Singaporean value- meritocracy and professionalism irrespective of the race and ethnicity of each one of us. We are indeed very proud that among our colleagues we have at least six nationalities that are working together and providing a strong cultural diversity to our work place. As a mostly Asian entity we have our strong faith in our close relationships among ourselves as well as with our business clients and partners. This enables us to do that extra bit and go that extra mile with a smile and which has indeed been appreciated by our valued partners over the years.

ESM bagged this year’s  “Partnership award” from BP in recognition of the value and relationship that we have been sharing with BP ever since we started our relationship for over the last four years. What makes it all the more cherishing is that we were nominated for the award by none other than the head of the BPMS, Tony Sullivan for the award. A very big thank you to Tony because for us it is not just an award we aspired for but a heart warming recognition bestowed by BP to ESM/SIMS as their equal partners.

Self- Resuscitation During
A Heart Attack

It was recently reported in an online health journal that two American cardiac specialists discovered a method of saving oneself from a heart attack when one is alone.

An in-depth study was reportedly conducted and the two specialists then released an article on their discovery and had it incorporated into the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) courses.

The method, informally called Cough CPR, has been tried, tested and certified by experts in the American Heart Association.

Given a hypothetical situation,

here is how one can help oneself when he or she experiences a heart attack when alone:

Suppose you are driving home alone. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest to your home. Unfortunately, you do not know if you will be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR but the course did not tell you what to do if it happened to yourself. What can you do?

Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about very two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

This reportedly works because deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keeps the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can resuscitate themselves or buy themselves enough time to get to a nearby hospital.
