Last few days the media has been abuzz with the prediction of disastrous consequences of environmental pollution within the very foreseeable future. Amidst the usual concern for the environment and the preservation of the nature has come a very concrete and genuine threat, as expressed by a world renown environmentalist Sir Nicholas Stern that our actions over the coming few decades could create risks of major disruption to economic and social activity, on a scale similar to those associated with the great wars and the economic depression of the first half of the 20th Century.

In the above light, the SIMS campus in Lonavala is an outstanding example of our deep commitment for the preservation of the environment.

The pre-sea campus is a role model of how the young cadets would be trained and groomed to care and value the preservation of environment we live in. The campus sites the biggest solar power project in Asia with the solar energy produced illuminating the campus and various utilities. The entire south-facing wall of the massive rectangular workshop houses 60 KW of solar cells. The water heater atop the cadet hostel is operated through solar energy.

Our MARPOL campaign, as reported in this issue, is another such example of how serious we are in educating, training and involving all in the organization in this process for which we are all responsible, some way or the other.

A NEW POLLUTION PREVENTION SOLUTION FOR THE MARINE INDUSTRY

A much needed pollution prevention solution seems to have been introduced by an US based company, which can handle phase-separated oil, emulsified oil and water.

The system takes suction directly from a ship's bilge or oily water collection tank and reduces the total petroleum hydrocarbons to less than 15ppm. Emulsified oil is also managed by the system, whether caused by detergents and/or the ship's mechanical systems. The company claims that three basic models to meet the different requirements for capacity and size constraints.

This automated biomechanical system is claimed to be safe and to require low maintenance. Unlike conventional oil water separators, the system claims to actually destroy oil and grease using naturally occurring bacteria. This technology is said to have been successfully used in hundreds of land-based applications since the 1970s and has been improved and specially designed for shipboard applications.

The fully automated system is designed to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week but can accommodate other schedules or instances when the system can destroy oil and grease in bilge water using naturally occurring bacteria.
