SIMS COURSE IN FULL SWING:
First FRAMO COURSE conducted by Frank Mohn

Inside this issue:

First ever Framo cargo pump course in the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies is scheduled from 06th October and the five day course will be conducted by the instructors from the manufacturers Frank Mohn AS, Norway.

The course is being conducted by the maker under most unique and realistic environment not available anywhere in the world. As we have already reported, the pump is installed in a stainless steel tank – a smaller replica of a real life tank of a chemical tanker where entire operation of the pump could be performed as in a ship.

We are overwhelmed by enthusiasm and eagerness from a wide range of applicants – including our own staff –sailing and ashore as well as senior representative from outside reputable government and non-government agencies and organizations to take part in this unique experience. All in the institute and their next door neighbor ESM, Mumbai as well as the staff of ESS( Executive Shipping Services) have given their heart and soul to make all these teaching amenities the very best by any international standard.

Congratulations to all of them for the job very well done!

SAFETY MOMENT   - OCTOBER 2003
A short sea trading cargo vessel, fully laden with cargo of shredded automative plastics was approaching her alteration course point off the Cornish Coast.

During his night watch, second mate was sitting on the pilot's chair in the wheelhouse. While in the process of getting up to check the ship's position on GPS, he had his trouser leg caught on the chair's footplate control lever. He fell heavily onto the deck, banging his head and lost consciousness. There was no other lookout person on the watch with the OOW.

By the time he regained consciousness, vessel was close to the sharp rocky Cornish Coast and soon she ran aground on the rocks near Land's End.

Lessons learned :

1. Bridge watch MUST not be maintained by a lone officer, during sunset to sunrise - when a lookout person must always be present.

2. Pilot chair is meant for the pilot only. Duty officer must not sit on the chair. Temptation to sit on the chair must always be resisted, especially during the night watches, when duty officer may easily be lulled into sleep.

3. A proper lookout must always be maintained by all available means.
