It is yet another milestone for SIMS, Lonavala when 75 Graduate Marine Engineering cadets join the campus in September as the first full batch of engineering cadets of the institute. It was a challenging task for the ESM field offices to select the brightest and the most capable trainees among hundreds wanting to join this world-class institute.

We are confident that the young cadets will make most of the unique facilities and environment and excel as young officers at the end of the training.

It is indeed a great feeling and sense of satisfaction for each one at ESM and SIMS to witness this process of growth of the organization. We are literally witnessing the growth of the next generation of the ESM/SIMS family and we are proud that the growth is possible due to the contribution made by each one in SIMS and ESM. It is also a matter of great satisfaction that our contribution is not just to ourselves but also to the country and the entire community from which all our sailing staff come from.
RECENT MARINE DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS
There have been several advances in technology and design which could improve the hydrodynamic and operational performance of a vessel resulting in savings on energy, time and commercial expenses.

New Blade Section Propeller:
(Reduces propeller cavitation, erosion and cavitation damages.)

Contoured Bolt Covers
New blade section technology tailors the blade surface pressure distributions to minimize blade surface cavitation. The new sections are thinner, incorporating high camber (mildly "cupped") at the trailing edge as shown in the left figure. Studies on the new blade section propeller confirmed the improvements in propeller cavitation performance under all conditions.

Full-scale experience indicates reduced cavitation erosion damage tendencies on the blade surface for the new blade section propeller compared to the standard propeller.


After 2 years of ship operations, the new propellers were inspected, and found to have no erosion damage. Speed/Power performance maintained throughout speed range with no changes to the propulsion system. The top speed was actually increased via reduced propeller thrust breakdown.
Twisted Rudder:
(Improves rudder cavitation performance, lessen cavitation erosion damage )

Twisted Rudder
Designed to reduce rudder erosion damage, and provide for cavitation-free operation during normal course keeping maneuvers. A rudder operates in the propeller slipstream, which contains swirl (rotation). Swirl produces varying angles of attack along the rudder span, which causes it to cavitate. Rudder cavitation can be reduced or avoided if the rudder is aligned with the local incoming flow of sea stream. Reduced rudder cavitation results in reduced erosion damage tendencies.
Stern Extension with Stern Flap:
(Stern flap developed in parallel with a lengthened transom)

Stern Flap
The stern flap was designed specifically for performance enhancement of vessels. It is projected to decrease annual propulsion fuel consumption resulting in significant cost savings, and as an added benefit, the stern flap can also increase the maximum ship speed by about 0.3 knots.

SHIP ANNIVERSARIES

M.T. British Robin, M.T. British Unity, M.T. Olmeca and LPG/C Rugby League celebrated their 1 year, 2 years, 3 years and 4 years anniversaries respectively last month. Happy belated Anniversaries to all ships and crew members onboard!
