South Korea To Build World's Largest Floating Dock

The world’s third largest shipyard, a South Korean shipbuilding company, reportedly, plans to build the world's biggest floating dock by June 2009.
At present, South Korea already has three floating docks but the new dock that is purportedly planned at 438 metres by 84 metres will be the largest in the world. Reportedly costing up to an estimated US$160 million, it will be able to produce six to seven container vessels per year to meet the growing demand for large container ships.
South Korea is currently home to seven of the world’s top 10 shipyards and has gotten a record number of orders both last and this year because of strong demand for crude carriers and offshore exploration equipment amid the rising oil prices.

First Ever ‘Green’ Luxury Residential Cruise Ship

The world’s first luxury residential cruise ship to offer 200 permanent ocean residences, ranging in size from 1000 sqft to 4000 sqft, as well as 265 suites for luxury cruise passengers, is reportedly expected to be one of the biggest luxury cruise ships in the world and also the most environmentally friendly.
Reportedly, this luxury residential cruise ship that is expected to set sail in 2010, not only effectively solves the world’s land shortage problem by providing floating luxury residences but also aims to maintain the highest environmental standards by implementing various ‘green’ initiatives onboard.
According to its builders, the cruise ship would set a ‘green’ benchmark for other cruise ships without compromising on creature comforts and aesthetics. Some of the ‘green’ initiatives of the ship includes solar panels that will generate energy for the ship’s exterior lighting, energy- and water-saving appliances will be used in the residences, and a satellite positioning system will guide the ship to prevent dropping anchor on precious sea beds and coral.
Other initiatives include using salt instead of chlorine as the catalyst in its ocean-based water desalinization units for recycling used water. And interestingly enough, golf balls for the avid golfer that can dissolve into fish food if they land in the ocean!

Strange Deep-Sea Creatures Found In Atlantic

An international team of 31 researchers from the Norway-based MAR-ECO project and the Census of Marine Life Program have reportedly discovered a number of strange animals while exploring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the Atlantic Ocean.
The ridge, an underwater mountain range that runs from Iceland to the Azores islands west of Portugal is around the size of the European Alps and is, according to experts, one of the largest areas of habitat available in the ocean. It is no wonder that researchers almost always report the discovery of a new species after each expedition.
Also, many of the species found on the ridge are reportedly rare. Having only been discovered in recent years, the species are also though to be new to science. Amongst the species discovered is the fearsome viperfish and a variety of small deep-sea crustaceans that are transparent, or nearly so, to better camouflage themselves in their murky habitat.
